17th Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival Makes a Comeback with an Impressive Selection of Films

The Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival (LABRFF) proudly announces its 17th edition, scheduled for November 4th to 7th, 2024, at the renowned Culver Theater. Recognized as the leading venue for Brazilian cinema in the United States, LABRFF unites filmmakers, actors, industry experts, and film lovers to honor the richness of Brazilian storytelling, culture, and artistic creativity.

Opening Night: Great Sertão Directed by Guel Arraes

The festival will kick off on November 4th with the highly anticipated Opening Night Gala, featuring the screening of  “Great Sertão”, directed by the acclaimed Guel Arraes. This visually captivating adaptation brings to life the legendary Brazilian novel "Grande Sertão: Veredas" by João Guimarães Rosa. Set against the backdrop of Brazil's arid hinterlands, the film delves into themes of love, violence, and identity through the journey of Riobaldo, a former jagunço (bandit) as he reflects on his tumultuous past, filled with conflict, passion, and profound existential questions.

The Opening Night will count with the presence of important actors and filmmakers from Brazil, names like Rodrigo Lombardi, who delivers a captivating performance. Lombardi, known for his dynamic roles in Brazilian television and film, is expected to light up the red carpet alongside the film’s director Guel Arraes. This exclusive screening will set the tone for a festival dedicated to represent the richness of Brazilian cinema.

Everyday Premieres, Documentaries, Shorts & Pitch Sessions

During the festival, LABRFF will showcase an exciting array of fiction features, documentaries, and short films, highlighting both emerging and established talent from Brazil's vibrant film scene.

Highlight: Premiere of Amazon Thriller The Park Maniac directed by Mauricio Eça

One of the festival's major highlights will be the premiere of Amazon Prime's thriller The Park Maniac, directed by Mauricio Eça. Known for his distinctive style and innovative storytelling, Eça delivers a chilling narrative that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. The Park Maniac is a psychological thriller that explores the dark side of obsession, setting a haunting atmosphere within the confines of an amusement park. Fans of suspenseful and atmospheric films won't want to miss this thrilling ride, making its international debut at LABRFF.

Closing Night: Estômago directed by Marcos Jorge

The festival will conclude on November 7th with the Closing Night Film, “Estômago”, directed by the talented Marcos Jorge. This critically acclaimed film, a culinary comedy-drama, tells the story of Raimundo Nonato, a man who discovers his talent in cooking in very unexpected circumstances. Through wit, humor, and culinary artistry, Estômago explores themes of survival, power dynamics, and the complex relationship between food and culture..

At the closing night, audiences can also expect the esteemed presence of Marcos Jorge, along with Nicola Siri, who has an important role in the film.
