Continue reading to find out more about this process and how we can help today.
Prostate cancer screening is typically done for men between the ages of 40 and 60 years old who have been showing signs or symptoms of prostate cancer. However, there is an understanding we want to encourage in all of our male patients that you do not have to wait for any particular age to be screened. If it's that time of year when you are going through your typical annual doctor visit, you should inquire about it. A clean bill of health all the way around can be a very relieving feeling for men of any age. There is reasonable certainty that screening is not needed in your 20s, but we have had men in their 30s come in just to be sure. And at times, it was one of the best things they could have done.
Once you have a screening scheduled, the process is fairly simple, as there are two typical methods of testing. The first is a digital rectal examination. This examination involves a healthcare professional examining the rectum and the prostate with their gloved fingers to feel for anything outside the norm. This could take the shape of malformations or growths inside the rectum or near the prostate, typically due to cancer. However, this is not always the case. The second type of exam is a Prostate-Specific Antigen or PSA Blood Test. In short, this tests for levels of said antigen to see if your blood has more or excessive amounts present within it. The reason for this is that the test is skewed at times. Things like prostate infection, benign hyperplasia being present, or a recent ejaculation can, at times, put your blood over the typical 0-4.0 nanograms per milliliter that are typically present. We understand that the blood test on its own would be preferable to most patients, but given these discrepancies, we often encourage both tests to be done to be sure.
If your prostate cancer screening comes back positive, you will not be alone. From the very moment we confirm that there is prostate cancer present, a comprehensive treatment plan will be created by the physician. Typically when early detection is successful, treatment can be extremely efficient and successful while removing cancer entirely. This comes with minimal to no long-term aftereffects. But thats why we're here at the Great Hartford Urology Group, to be used as a resource to get you on the road to recovery as quickly as possible. And if, during this process, we find that there are other complications present, if we cant manage treatment, we will get in contact with other specialists that we have connections with. At the end of the day and this process, we want you to know that you have an entire support network present through our team.
