What is Turtle Krawl 5K Walk/Run?

The annual Turtle Krawl 5K event collects funds for the Sea Turtle Preservation Society to continue education and conservation programs. All race proceeds benefit the Sea Turtle Preservation Society's mission to help sea turtles survive.

History: The Turtle Krawl was created in 2001 by Donna Lee Crawford, who worked for the Brevard County Parks and Recreation Department. The original Turtle Krawl was described as a "family fun 10K Bike/Skate and 5K Run/Walk held in the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge." From 2001 through 2008, the event grew to nearly 300 participants and over 20 sponsors contributing up to $2000 annually to benefit the STPS.

What is the Sea Turtle Preservation Society?

About 90% of the sea turtle eggs in the US are laid in Florida. A group of Brevard County citizens formed a grass-roots organization in 1984 to protect the large number of sea turtles that nest on area beaches and forage the Indian River Lagoon. The group was incorporated in 1986 as the Sea Turtle Preservation Society (STPS). The society is not-for-profit with the sole mission of "Helping sea turtles survive."

What does STPS do?

STPS works tirelessly to educate the public about protecting the sea turtle population and helping sick and injured sea turtles arriving at the local beaches. The nesting season is between May and October.

This project is very important as Brevard County is an extremely important natural habitat for sea turtles. With the Atlantic beaches and the Indian River Lagoon System, this strategic location is a nesting and foraging site for three species of sea turtles: the loggerhead, the green, and the leatherback.

How does Turtle Krawl 5K Walk/Run help?

In past years, funds raised at the Turtle Krawl 5K have supported numerous efforts to help these protected species, including:

• Brevard Zoo's Sea Turtle Healing Center
• STPS rescue and transport of injured sea turtles, nesting surveys, night walks, and other educational outreach programs.
• Funds used in purchasing satellite transmitters for the UCF marine turtle research program.

The Turtle Krawl 5K takes place on September 9, 2023, at 7:30 a.m. at the James H. Nance Park Indialantic, FL 32903. You can take a peek at the scenic race route here.

Who Can Participate?

There are several Race Award Categories and different age groups participating. This is an event for all in the community, and DC Roofing, Inc. is delighted to be a part of it. The race is being held both in-person and virtually this year. Over one thousand five hundred (1500+) participants are expected this year. This year, the award-winning Turtle Krawl shirts feature original artwork by local artist Michael Nemo Nemnich.
