Garfield Heights, OH - Superior Behavioral Health published a blog post discussing the side effects people experience when they drink alcohol. Alcohol use can cause side effects that impact people’s minds and bodies. While some symptoms are temporary, others can affect a person their whole life. Some side effects are reversible with treatment, while others may not be. It is essential to be aware of the side effects that can impact someone when partaking in alcohol use.

“Alcohol has several effects on your body, and drinking excessively can harm your health. These factors can include physical and mental ailments. Excessive drinking is defined as drinking more drinks than how much your body can handle at one time. For women, it is at least 4 drinks in 2 hours. For men, this number is at least 5 drinks in 2 hours. One drink is 8 oz for malt liquor, 12 oz for beer, 5 oz for wine, and 1.5 oz for distilled spirits such as whiskey, rum, and gin,” the blog post states.

The most well-known side effect is how alcohol impacts the liver. The liver breaks down about 1 drink an hour, however, when consuming more alcohol, the liver becomes overwhelmed. Liver disease comes in three stages: steatosis, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. The first two stages of liver disease are reversible with treatment. Cirrhosis is not and often leads to liver failure. Alcohol can also alter the way a person’s brain functions. Conditions such as dementia, epilepsy, and cerebral infections can happen with long-term alcohol use.

There are other side effects that people might experience as well. In the short term, these include lowered inhibitions and impulsive behavior, making people more likely to participate in dangerous behaviors. They might also have a loss of coordination or slurred speech. Long-term side effects are also possible. Several conditions can present themselves when someone engages in repeated excessive alcohol use. Some of those conditions include cancer, strokes, and weak immune systems. People might also develop depression and anxiety because of their alcohol use.

While alcohol use can cause side effects, stopping one’s alcohol use can also result in side effects. The process of stopping long-term alcohol use is known as alcohol withdrawal, and a doctor should monitor a person’s symptoms. A doctor can help them through the symptoms of withdrawal that can occur hours after their last drink, with peak intensity around 24-48 hours. These side effects might include agitation, anxiety, tremors, and nausea.

“Alcohol poisoning is a medical emergency, and if you notice someone is experiencing symptoms of alcohol poisoning, you should call 911 immediately. It typically occurs when you drink more than what your body can handle at one time. It doesn’t matter what type of alcohol you consume – it matters more about how much alcohol you drink. Those who participate in binge drinking are more likely to experience alcohol poisoning. Some common symptoms of alcohol poisoning include slow breathing, blue skin, and unconsciousness,” the blog post continues.
