Recently, in Cape Town, Art Afrique, under the visionary leadership of Carol Hogarth, is proud to unveil their latest artistic project at Canal Walk shopping centre. Known for their exceptional work in transforming spaces with captivating art, Art Afrique has collaborated with over twenty-eight local artists and artisans, alongside two hundred learners from local schools, to create a stunning beaded butterfly art installation.
Art Afrique, a company that has previously brought their artistic touch to prestigious locations such as Menlyn in Pretoria and the One&Only Hotel in Cape Town, is dedicated to fostering creativity and community engagement through their projects. This recent endeavor at Canal Walk is no exception, showcasing their commitment to integrating art and education.
Carol Hogarth, alongside her husband, Robin Hogarth, a celebrated South African composer and double Grammy Award winner, led this inspiring project. Robin Hogarth, who is also the Honorary President of the St Hill Arts Festival in the UK, brought his expertise and passion for the arts to this collaborative effort.
A highlight of the Canal Walk project is the involvement of two hundred young learners from Marconi Bean Primary and Sinenjongo High. These children, equipped with art kits, participated in painting and beading the butterfly, creating a perfect selfie spot for mall visitors. The butterfly, adorned with over 200,000 beads, took four months to complete, with significant contributions from master beading artist Thokozani Twala.
Beyond the artistic endeavor, Art Afrique is committed to educating and inspiring future generations. The company incorporates "The Way to Happiness" booklet to teach children about leading a happy and ethical life. During the workshops, the children were introduced to the Genius Characteristics, such as "Drive" and "Imagination," as described by Dr. Alfred Barrios. They were also gifted a "24 Characteristics of Genius" chart, their personal beaded butterfly, and a copy of "The Way to Happiness" booklet.
Carol and Robin Hogarth's dedication to using art as a vehicle for education and personal development is further demonstrated by their use of the Organizational System of L. Ron Hubbard, taught by the Hubbard College of Administration. This structured approach ensures that their projects are not only artistically inspiring but also efficiently executed.
The beaded butterfly symbolizes transformation and hope, much like the Canal Walk shopping centre itself, which has undergone numerous transformations over its twenty-year history. The butterfly, with its ability to see more colors, sense atmospheric pressure, and feel the earth's magnetism, serves as a powerful metaphor for the limitless potential and creativity that Art Afrique strives to unleash in every project.
Art Afrique's installation at Canal Walk, complemented by Louis Chanu's 'Spring butterflies in flight ', Kelly O'Brien's 'Spring Clouds' wallpaper, and Nathaan Shahan's painted apple seating, invites visitors to experience the magic of art and the joy of creativity. This project not only beautifies the space but also enriches the community, nurturing a culture of creativity and ethical living.
