New York, New York, United States - 01-18-2023 (PR Distribution™) -

Multi-award-winning multidisciplinary designer, Jisol Lee is riding high, having just been awarded silver at the 2022 NYX Awards and recognized as a winner in the 59th GDUSA Design awards. We interviewed Jisol about her creative life to learn more about her work, and sources of inspiration.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?
It's not clear when or how I happened to see Stefan Sagmeister's AIGA Detroit lecture poster – having typography carved into your own body. I was fascinated by his work that exists beyond aesthetics and becomes part of what is being represented. Since then, I fell in love with graphic design and decided to go to the college Stefan teaches.

You studied advertising and graphic design at the School of Visual Arts but pursued a career in product design. How does this creative shift appear in your archive?
By the time, I graduated from college, UX/UI industry was booming and the world became more digitally connected. So many designers already switched or intended to switch careers to User Experience design. I was one of them.

What's your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part of my job is that I get to work with other designers. This is a cool way for me to keep growing, inspiring, and learning. I get to hear other perspectives on my work from designers or colleagues especially when I get stuck.

Tell us about a project or two you're most proud of and why?
I am proud of the interactive microsite I worked. The site was built to collect user-submitted GIFs of people giving Obama a standing ovation that then become a mosaic of Obama himself. Within days, thousands of people submitted GIFs of themselves applauding. I was filled with emotion when the mosaic filled up and a picture of Obama appeared. I am proud that I and people from the world together as a whole made history that is the largest digital standing ovation.
I have always dreamed of working on a commercial and it was the reason I studied advertising design in college. Luckily, I had a chance to work on a commercial for the brand, The Dad. The video was a hilarious drug commercial parody that promotes temporary relief from parenting. It was not as fancy as the Super Bowl commercials, but it's my first-ever commercial and I am so proud of it.

What are the prominent design trends you have your eye on? How will you differentiate your projects while still remaining ‘on-trend’?
I don't follow trends. I believe we should design for our client’s needs and not for a trendy look.

With so much innovation in the way we live, how do you envision the future of product design?
Product design has changed significantly in the last decade due to technology and all that brings with it. The next decade of design will be unlike anything we have ever seen before and we will see many new technologies like Metaverse, Web3, and AI widely apply to our daily lives.

What advice would you give to a young designer?
Be patient with your career. Put the time in to learn. If you work hard and put in the time, you will move up, you will take on more responsibility, and you will get to where you want to be.
