Torrance, CA: In a world where people with disabilities are often left out of the social conversation, ICAN California Abilities Network is a beacon of hope for those that may feel excluded. With its enhanced social programs and employment inclusion services, ICAN provides meaningful social and recreational opportunities for disabled individuals, offering a safe space for building genuine connections with one another.
The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 was a monumental step forward in ensuring equality for those with a disability. Among other things, it mandated the construction of wheelchair ramps leading into public buildings. This simple addition made it possible for those with mobility impairments to participate in many everyday recreational activities enjoyed by the able-bodied population.
And so began an ongoing effort to make all forms of recreation equally available to everyone, regardless of ability status. But ICAN California Abilities Network has been a leader in this effort for much longer, long before the ADA was signed into law. ICAN’s special programs enable people with disabilities to get out of the house and engage in activities beyond just recreation. Their social events are designed to help individuals make connections, build relationships with peers, and find support from qualified professionals.
ICAN is dedicated to creating community and inclusion through its unique programs. One of them is the “Movie Days'' event, which brings together people with disabilities once a month to watch a movie together and discuss it afterward. ICAN is truly a place of acceptance and understanding. Besides community events, the organization organizes field trips and outings to help individuals expand their horizons while still being accepted by those around them.
With its social programs, ICAN has created a safe and welcoming space for individuals with disabilities to participate in activities they may not have access to without the organization’s help. Moreover, the organization offers supportive services such as counseling, job readiness training, resume-building workshops, and educational assistance.
Their passionate and dedicated staff is working hard to ensure that people with disabilities can access the same social opportunities as everyone else, enriching their lives and creating genuine connections with others who understand them. This helps increase their self-confidence and build meaningful relationships with others.
