When a physical parameter changes, it is detected by the sensors and converted into an optical signal which is then transmitted along the cable to a data collection point. This signal can then be analyzed to determine the value of the parameter. DFOS are used for a wide range of applications, including infrastructure monitoring, pipeline monitoring, and seismic monitoring.
