Burlacha Balka, Ukraine, 7th Jun 2023 – The South Korean government has announced its plans to distribute one million discount coupons as part of its efforts to stimulate domestic spending and revitalize the economy in the aftermath of the pandemic and ongoing economic challenges. There are concerns regarding the current trend of frugal consumption, as it may further contribute to a decline in overall spending and cast doubt on the country’s long-term economic growth.
The 바우처 쿠폰 program encompasses eight different sectors, including tourism, culture, leisure, and services. The Ministry of Economy and Finance, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, aims to counteract the negative impact of the global crises by the end of the year.
Approximately 10 million people are expected to benefit from this coupon scheme, which aims to boost spending in various industries such as tourism, cinema, food services, and agriculture. The government plans to offer discounts ranging from 30,000 to 40,000 won for accommodation bookings, 8,000 won per person for theater tickets, and an additional 10,000 won for credit card users who spend more than 20,000 won while dining out every fifth time. The distribution of the coupons has already begun, with some of them already being distributed to the public. In addition, there is an upcoming Discountler long-term online coupon program. This project aims to further promote the use of online coupons and encourage increased participation.
As part of the initiative hotel bookings in Korea will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Even foreigners with a Korean phone number can participate in the promotion. The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, in collaboration with the National Tourism Organization of Korea, began issuing discount coupons for hotel reservations at the start of the season. These coupons can provide a discount ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 won when booking domestic accommodations through 49 designated online travel agencies.
The distribution of the discount coupons will occur once per person on a first-come, first-served basis, with an expiration date. If a hotel reservation is missed and the coupon is no longer valid, a new coupon can be obtained the following day. If the room rate is below 70,000 won, a 20,000 won discount coupon will be provided. For rates exceeding 70,000 won, the discount increases to 30,000 won. The coupon can only be utilized when booking certified accommodations such as hotels, apartments, resorts, pensions, rural guest houses, hostels, motels, and similar options.
Park Bo Gyun, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, expressed hope that this initiative would provide a small consolation for individuals fatigued by the pandemic and ongoing crises, while also supporting the struggling tourism industry. Accommodations will be informed about the need to adhere to the rules and will be provided with necessary development opportunities, enabling people to travel across the country.
Furthermore, plans are underway to establish a call center and a chatbot (Interpark) specifically for customers with disabilities. This initiative aims to ensure that vulnerable tourists can enjoy discounted accommodations in a comfortable manner.
To address concerns regarding unjustified price hikes by accommodation establishments during events, measures will be taken this year to limit such practices. These actions are part of an ongoing effort to promote transparency and fairness in the industry.
