Home Sleep Apnea Testing For Early OSA Diagnosis, Medical Report Released

PRESS RELEASE
Published February 15, 2024

Popper's comprehensive report examines newly available Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT), an evolution in sleep apnea diagnosis that is expected to offer better healthcare accessibility to patients in remote communities, those with mobility issues, and those more apt to test for potential sleep apnea if they can do it themselves in the comfort of their own homes. Popper says that in his experience, benefits and conveniences such as these directly translate into more reliable diagnostic outcomes and consistent treatment adherence.

Statistics available through The National Council on Aging reveal that 39 million US adults have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Left untreated, OSA can lead to serious health problems, including heart, kidney, and metabolic complications. Popper's report, titled "Home Sleep Apnea Testing Empowers Sleep Medicine," delves into the potential for HSAT to offer critical, early diagnosis and treatment to a broader range of patients, particularly those with a high pre-test probability of moderate to severe OSA.

"In my practice, integrating HSAT has streamlined the diagnostic pathway. It has enabled quicker diagnosis and initiation of treatment among a broader population," says Popper. "HSAT offers a patient-friendly alternative to traditional in-laboratory polysomnography (PSG), a pivotal advancement in early diagnosis and preventive healthcare."

Popper explains the evolution of HSAT devices was driven by advancements in sensor technology, data processing, and an increasing focus on patient-centric care.

While technologies are continually evolving to offer better quality and accuracy of data, certain devices, like the WatchPAT ONE, have emerged as leaders in easy, reliable, and disposable HSAT. Popper says this is just one example of a diverse range of HSAT devices now on the market that offer unique attributes based on differing patient needs.

Popper says he anticipates further development of more sophisticated, accurate, and user-friendly versions of HSAT with the potential to offer better insight into sleep architecture and accompanying respiratory factors.

While Popper's report notes HSAT is not without its limitations - challenges like difficulties in detecting central sleep apnea and less accurate diagnosis of mild OSA - the potential for these devices to revolutionize sleep apnea testing is, says Popper, undeniable.
