Josh Berrigan, Celebrates a Lifetime of Helping Troubled Youth

A community is made up of a lot of people working together. We have our public service heroes such as our firefighters, nurses, and police. But there are also people who have helped shape the lives of many in our communities that may never get the praise or recognition of our emergency service heroes…

Yet, their contribution has been profound in helping to shape the lives of our youth. In this article, we’ll be focusing on one of these people. Joshua Berrigan who lives and works in the district of McPherson on the Southern Gold Coast.

Josh Berrigan has a degree in International Business and a Law degree from Griffith University, however he left the corporate world behind as he felt a different calling. To help those in the community and more specifically the youth who were in desperate need of help and guidance.

As a husband and father, Joshua Berrigan felt that his path in life was to lift up those who had been dealt a less than fortunate hand in life.

Over the past 15 years he’s helped many many kids, a lot of whom are now young adults get through challenges and overcome hardships in their lives.

Josh says “It’s so encouraging catching up with kids I helped years ago, to now see they are in a good place as smiling young adults”.

One such story is the story of a young boy named Rob. Josh has known Rob for 15 years and they recently caught up as Josh was helping Rob to pick up bed for him and his partner for their new home. Josh was glad to hear that Rod has a partner that he loves, a job that keeps him busy, and a group of good friends which he’s never really had before.

Josh met Rob when he was 10 years old and was ‘out of control’ at school. Josh says “there’s always a reason a child is acting up, and when you identify why, it’s often heartbreaking”.

Rob’s story was one of these heartbreaking situations. Rob’s mother was in a physically abusive relationship, which Rob (as a 10 year old) tried to protect his mother from. Josh found himself taking Rob’s mum to court to support her, and has since spent many ongoing years continuing to support her & the kids who are now young adults.

Rob and his family are one of many that Joshua has come alongside and helped to care for. I was personally bewildered by the fact that long after Joshua had moved on from employment where he was supporting Rob – working there for 2 years, Joshua continued to personally

support the family for 15 years and counting. This shows me that for those like Josh, helping and advocating for others is not a job, it’s their heart.

There are many people who live in the community that are doing it tough. I for one am encouraged to find out about people like Josh who has decided to make it their mission in life to let people like Rob know that they are not alone, that there are people that care about them, and will do whatever they can to lift them up and help move them forward. This is the kind of community I want to be a part of.
