Medical tourism, which is one of the essential sectors ensuring sustainable economic development of Turkey, aims to capture a large share of the global pie of $100 billion in 2022. While the investments in the technology of the health sector in Turkey, the quality of doctors, and the beauty of the geographical location of the country increases the number of medical tourists, the increase in the promotion of the country over time has allowed Turkey to take a crucial position in the field of medical tourism.
While there has been a recession in all sectors in the world for more than two years, medical tourism remains one of the sectors with the highest foreign exchange income in Turkey. After hosting more than 642,444 foreign patients in 2021, Turkey is expected to host 1.5 million foreign patients in 2023.
After the General Manager of Healdone Mehmet Akif Becer stated his expectations that Turkey would get a large part of the global pie which is $100 billion in medical tourism, saying:
“In 2021, Turkey earned $1048,549 from medical tourism. I think that Turkey is the most important center for medical tourism globally because it has world-class doctors, hospitals, and clinics equipped with the latest technology and medical consultants who are ready to meet all the patient’s needs. It is not difficult for Turkey to get 10 billion dollars out of 100 billion dollars,”
Becer continued, “There is a demand for medical tourism in Turkey from all over the world. As our service quality is high, I think it is possible to host more patients very comfortably.”
Most foreign tourists who came to Turkey for treatment in 2021 had come from Europe.
The Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, and Belgium are among the countries whose citizens frequent Turkish medical facilities. Additionally, the demand from Sweden, Denmark, and Norway is very high.
The Middle East countries also maintained their advanced position in the ranking. The specialties most preferred by tourists who come to Turkey to receive health services are cosmetology, hair transplantation, oral health, smile design, heart surgery, orthopedics, oncology, and in vitro fertilization treatment.
Becer confirmed that the per capita spending in this sector amounts to $1,900 and added,” Our Ministry of Health continues to work on recording medical tourism revenues, and we believe that the amount of spending $1,900 may rise to the level of $10,000. In addition, we anticipate that there will be a significant increase in the number of foreign patients coming to our country through the “Health Visa” facilities that will be offered by our Ministry again.”
Noting that Turkey has achieved a boom in the field of medical tourism, Becer said,
“We are pleased with the increase in the number of foreign visitors coming to Turkey for treatment. And we note the effect of the increased promotion of Turkey. As the health tourism sector in Turkey, We expect it to gain a significant acceleration in the global share and provide a greater inflow of foreign exchange into our country, which will affect the current account deficit.”
Referring to Turkey’s treatment cost advantage, Becer said, “Turkey is preferred because of the advantages it offers, such as infrastructure, quality of health services, trained and experienced workforce and competitive prices.”
