Empyrean Wins €9m Contract To Supply Michelin Tyres To Uzbekistan’s NMMC

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Empyrean Heavy Machinery Spare Parts Trading LLC has won a €9 million order from Uzbekistan’s leading gold and uranium miner to supply Michelin tyres for ore trucks.

Empyrean, which is owned by Uzbek businessman Akmal Mamarahimov, will supply 276 specialised XDR3 tyres from Michelin in the United States.

The tyres, which are 2.7 meters tall and cost €32,850 each, will be supplied to Navoi Mining and Metallurgical Combinat (NMMC).

NMMC is one of the top 10 gold and uranium producers in the world and its Muruntau mine is the world’s biggest open-cast gold mine. NMMC, which is owned by the Uzbekistan government, is regarded as one of the country’s most important commercial enterprises, contributing 8.2% of national GDP in 2020.

Empyrean is based in Dubai and works with well-known brands including Caterpillar, Shell, Michelin, Hitachi, Komatsu. The company acts as an intermediary selling equipment to state-owned miners in Uzbekistan such as NMMC.

Empyrean was founded in November 2018 by Akmal Mamarahimov, whose brother Muslim Mamarahimov was formerly a senior manager at NMMC. Empyrean has become one of NMMC’s largest suppliers since it was established and won tenders worth $293 million between 2019 and 2021.

Among the notable contracts awarded to Empyrean by NMMC was a May 2020 deal to supply 11 Komatsu 220-tonne mining trucks worth $41 million. This was in addition to a $34 million contract awarded by NMMC in July 2020 to supply 10 793D mining trucks from Caterpillar, which is an official distribution partner of Empyrean.

Empyrean said: “Our company has dealer and trade relations with the largest manufacturers of industrial equipment, spare parts, raw materials and consumables. Empyrean successfully provides the necessary equipment for construction, oil and mining enterprises.”

Empyrean is owned by two UAE-based companies: SORP Investment LLC owns 51% and IPC FZE owns 49%. The ultimate beneficial owner of these entities is Akmal Mamarahimov, who is from Navoi the Uzbek city that also the home of NMMC.

Empyrean’s managing director in Dubai is Muhammad Imran Abbasi. Mr Abbasi is a Pakistani businessman who also runs the SORP Group, which helps companies set up a business in the UAE.
