Dr. Pedram Salimpour Granted Alumni Service Award by University of California

Los Angeles, California The UCR Alumni Service Award honors superior service in the public sector or a sustained pattern of volunteer service in the community, arts, or for the benefit of UCR that has positively represented the university and fellow citizens.

Salimpour, a physician, scientist, and entrepreneur has dedicated years of service to numerous charitable boards and has built several nonprofit companies to serve those less privileged within the Los Angeles community and around the United States. He is currently a managing partner at Plymouth Holdings, a healthcare-focused private equity firm, and the co-founder and CEO of Pierce Health Solutions, which provides health solutions to large U.S. and international corporations.

Presently, Salimpour sits on the board of HealthCorps, a national nonprofit founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife, Lisa, to improve the mental and physical health of teenagers nationwide. Previously, Salimpour served as the youngest ever president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association and is a three-time appointed member of the Los Angeles Fire and Police Pension Board, managing over $30 billion in assets. Salimpour is a founding member of the School of Medicine at UCR. Additionally, he served on several boards at his subsequent alma maters, including Boston University School of Medicine, UCLA School of Public Health, and as an adviser for the Whitehead Institute at MIT. He is also the founding chairman of the board of directors of Discovery Cube Los Angeles.

“If you look at his resume, it’s a long list of many wonderful things that he’s contributed to the community,” says UCR’s Dean of the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences, Kathryn Uhrich. “But really, two things stand out to me. One is an organization he started that focuses on poor families in Los Angeles, ensuring they have access to health care — in particular, making sure that there are free services that would be available to foster children. The second aspect is the role that he plays in providing health care to Native American tribes. It’s providing health care to a community that sometimes gets overlooked and making sure that they have access to medical care.”

In 2003, Salimpour co-founded NexCare Collaborative to help low-income families and foster children gain access to health care services. Just two years later, he co-founded CareNex Health Services, an organization committed to improving care in neonatal intensive care units throughout the country. He is also the co-founder of Plymouth Health, a physician-owned company that acquired Alvarado Hospital Medical Center in San Diego.

“I’m honored and humbled to receive this recognition from UCR,” says Salimpour. “I am so grateful for the opportunities I’ve received in my life while at and since graduating from this wonderful institution.”

Dr. Salimpour received his bachelor’s degree in biology at UCR. He went on to earn his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine where he was named the first-ever two-time recipient of the American College of Physicians Research Award, among many other awards recognizing his basic science and clinical research. He went on to complete his residency at USC Medical Center.
