Does it have any effect on personality and human well-being?

Some people state that people should choose baby names more wisely. According to David Zhu, a professor of management and entrepreneurship, who researches the psychology of names at Arizona State University: “Because a name is used to identify an individual and communicate with the individual on a daily basis, it serves as the very basis of one’s self-conception, especially in relation to others,”. This means that children’s names could have a major impact on children’s individual and social success. Moreover, Gordon Allport, one of the founders of personality psychology added that “the most important anchorage to our self-identity throughout life remains our own name”. According to the research, People who do not like their name tend to have lower self-esteem. A person’s name represents him as a human being and can have a significant effect on his life quality, and social life. Also, it can strongly impact beliefs bout himself.

On the other hand, some parents are tend not to worry about their children’s names too much and chose the name they like. Parents believe that it is their duty to choose the name they like and this may have no effect on their children’s future. What is more, in a more globalized world parents even prefer to choose exceptional and unique names. As the growing cultural shift towards individualism can be noticed, parents wish to give their children names that could stand out from the crowd and make their children exceptional, even those names sound weird and in the future can cause serious challenges for a growing individual.
