Continued COVID Surge Provides Headaches for Texas Businesses

Austin, TX – September 17, 2021 – If you’re a business owner, chances are that COVID-19 is one of the biggest concerns you have right now. Although Governor Abbott has rescinded all capacity restrictions on businesses, if you are in the service or hospitality industry, you’re probably just beginning to bounce back. After all, the contagious Delta variant continues to discourage patrons from returning to your business.

However, the threat is more serious than people not wanting to spend time in public. For many business owners, the prospect of a lawsuit or workman’s compensation claim looms large. Fortunately, the Texas legislature recently passed a law that limits business liability for COVID in most cases. The law, SB 6, shields businesses from suits by both employees and customers. The only exception is when a business fails to warn consumers of the risk or fails to implement mitigation measures.

While legal experts agree that SB 6 provides broad protections, the lack of absolute protection from suits should give us a pause. In a nutshell, it means that a business can still be sued when there is reason to believe that the business didn’t do enough to protect people.

That’s where business insurance comes in. With liability protection from an insurance company, your business will have the legal tools to fight back if a claim is made. Insurance pays for both legal advice and judgements or settlements when it’s needed. This way, you don’t have to risk your business by being open, no matter how high case counts may get.

As Nicole Smith, CEO of SBFreeQuote.com puts it, “Businesses want to protect their employees and customers. But in some situations, even businesses that follow the best advice face legal claims. Luckily, business liability insurance helps to give you peace of mind knowing that you are less likely to go bankrupt due to a judgement.”

Not having any insurance, or not having enough, is a major threat to your business long-term. You can look for affordable business insurance at SBFreeQuote.com with no obligation.
