The Daily Reporter’s Top Projects Award is the most prestigious and extensive built-environment contest. It celebrates building projects constructed in the previous year. The recognition program highlights each project, effectively conveying the experience of how the buildings became a reality, along with the challenges crews had to overcome. This year the Daily Reporter received over a hundred nominees for the Top Projects Awards. As the award recognizes the most remarkable projects in Wisconsin during the previous year, forty winners were picked from among a hundred for the main awards event, including Karcher Middle School.
Scherrer Contruction’s nomination for the Karcher Middle School project was chosen as one of the winners because of the school’s modern and energy-efficient new campus building and the efficiency of the pre-construction services provided. The pre-construction services included the facility study, cost projections, and an effective referendum campaign. The services proved to be invaluable for the beautiful new middle school building. The construction of Karcher Middle School is of historical value, as it replaces the older building that had been in use since 1924. The modern school building is owned by Burlington Area School District, covering an impressive 145,000 square foot area.
Today, the new school serves over 700 children and has numerous curriculum classrooms, co-curricular, special education, and elective programming spaces for STEAM, music, orchestra, and chorus. The building also houses a two-station gym, exercise room, locker rooms, and common facilities such as the library, cafeteria, staff offices, and other work and storage rooms.

“We are very proud to have won this prestigious award. It just shows how much teamwork, hard work, and an experienced team can achieve. The Karcher Middle School was amongst the biggest and most challenging projects we had tackled over the years. However, we had identified clear goals for the building, which allowed us to start working on overcoming many of the challenges we foresaw early on. There were still challenges we had to find solutions for that weren’t instantly apparent, but the work we put in was worth it.” Said a representative for Scherrer Construction Co. Inc.
