Park City, UT – Cayo Films’ production team is scouting locations in Ouarzazate, Morocco for its upcoming multi-season TV series The Covenant. The dramatic series will depict the iconic, beloved and foundational stories from the Old Testament.

The Covenant’s creative team includes incredible talent producing the series. Cyrus Nowrasteh, acclaimed director (The Young Messiah, The Stoning of Soraya M), directs the project with a screenplay from award-winning writer Andrew Klavan (Edgar Award Winner, The Daily Wire).

Morocco’s vibrant scenery and landscape will immerse audiences into the ancient world of the Old Testament. Known as the gateway to the Sahara Desert, Ouarzazate is the home of Atlas Film Studios, the location of many American favorites including Gladiator, The Mummy, Aladdin and an episode of the ever-iconic Game of Thrones.

“For our show, Morocco really suits us because we have great sound stages there where we can build our throne rooms and the interiors of the homes of our characters while at the same time having an incredible landscape right outside that we can capture,” said Cyrus Nowrasteh, director of The Covenant.

Each episode of The Covenant tells the stories of saints and sinners, prophets and patriarchs, and kings and conquerors. By showing the glory and grit of beloved characters like Daniel, Abraham, Ruth and Esther and others, this series will create shared experiences across faiths and bring people back to stories that matter.

“The stories of the Old Testament are beloved by millions, yet they are being lost, forgotten and misunderstood” said Ron Daw, co-founder and CEO of Cayo Films. “By bringing to life the stories of saints and sinners, patriarchs and prophets, conquerors and kings, we want to bring people around the world back to stories that matter and the shared experiences and culture of the entire human family.”

Unlike other depictions of the Old Testament, The Covenant is rooted in biblical and historical text to honor the stories and characters without manipulating their nature or the meaning of their experiences. The Covenant will represent the stories within their ancient contexts, not through the views of any specific religious tradition. This approach will allow every viewer to connect with the stories they know and love.

In addition to Nowrasteh and Klavan, The Covenant will involve additional award-winning filmmakers, producers, and on-screen talent.

Cayo Films hopes The Covenant will be a source of faith and light in times of grief and despair. A recent study from Pew Research Center found that 25% of U.S. adults said their faith has grown stronger throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The impact of this project will stretch far beyond a single season, religion, community, or country,” said Daw. “We hope to create shared experiences that bring people back to common heritage.”
