Property managers can use BookingPal as a central channel manager for its vacation rental business in Europe and process credit cards legally and securely through Stripe’s 3DS system without having to become their own merchant of record or using multiple payment gateways.
3DS is a security protocol used to authenticate users; it provides an extra layer of protection for payment card transactions in card-not-present scenarios. 3DS was designed to allow a cardholder to authenticate their identity to prevent payment fraud, block unauthorized transactions, and reduce chargebacks. 3DS is similar to 2-factor authentication where a confirmation text is sent to the user who then must type the text code to prove their identity before the credit card is actually charged.
In recent years, the European Union’s revised Payment Services Directive (PSD2) has imposed strict verification requirements via a process called “Strong Customer Authentication (SCA),” which 3DS addresses.
“From our side, this would help us to ensure PSD2 compliance which is mandatory for us to pass credit card details to clients with acquiring banks in the EEA,” says Sabrina Kite, HomeToGo technical account manager. “Without this, we would not be able to pass credit card details to EU clients.”
