Berger and Green Awards 2022 Heart Disease Scholarship

PITTSBURGH, PA, August 06, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Berger and Green, a personal injury law firm based in Pittsburgh, awarded its 2022 Heart Disease Scholarship to Joshua Peterson. The $1,000 award will help Mr. Peterson pursue studies at West Virginia University’s School of Medicine. Mr. Peterson will begin his first year of medical school this fall.

As a law firm serving people with disabilities and injury victims for over 40 years, Berger and Green aims to create opportunities for youth facing health challenges from heart disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in five Americans lost their lives to heart disease in 2020. This condition increasingly affects younger people in the United States. Berger and Green’s annual Heart Disease Scholarship supports one worthy student living with heart disease as they pursue higher education goals.

As an infant born in China, Mr. Peterson faced a life-threatening ventricular septal defect. His international adoption granted him the chance to receive open-heart surgery in the United States. Mr. Peterson remembered how this crucial medical care saved his life. After medical school, he hopes to work with orphaned children facing similar medical conditions.

Mr. Peterson began exploring this path in global health as a college student. He interned with the same international adoption agency that sponsored his childhood adoption. During this time, Mr. Peterson learned about the challenges faced by many international orphans.

Many children with health conditions cannot be placed for adoption unless they receive a doctor’s endorsement. Few doctors are available to work with every child in need. In his infancy, however, a doctor advocated for Mr. Peterson and other medically challenged orphans in China. In the future, Mr. Peterson hopes to either work internationally with orphans with health conditions or work in adoption medicine domestically in the U.S.

Mr. Peterson writes, “My vision is to use my education and professional position to continue serving populations like these who will continue to suffer without the intentional help of an outside source.”

Mr. Peterson will pursue studies through West Virginia University’s Culinary Lifestyle and Medicine track. In the future, he also hopes to pair this with studies in global health.

Berger and Green states that students with heart disease may face many challenges, but they should still have the support to pursue their dreams. The law firm offers this annual Heart Disease Scholarship to a worthy undergraduate or graduate student in the United States. Students living with a congenital heart condition or another form of heart disease are encouraged to apply. Students must have a 3.0 GPA and submit several application materials, including a transcript and a 500 – 1,000-word essay.
