Atlanta Area Dermatologist Dr. Josh A. Hammel Achieves Certification In Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery

Panama City, Florida –

Dermatology Specialists of Georgia is excited to announce that dermatologist Dr. Josh A. Hammel, MD has passed the American Board of Dermatology’s 2021 Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery Subspecialty Certification Examination.

His most recent triumph makes him among some of the first in the nation to be double board-certified in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery. Along with being fellowship-trained in Mohs Micrographic Surgery, Dr. Hammel has performed over 3,000 Mohs surgeries to successfully treat skin cancer in patients under his care. Dr. Hammel says that he is proud to have earned a certification in this subspecialty that demonstrates a high standard of knowledge and skill in Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery and that the certification also illustrates his dedication to life-long learning in the field.

Dr. Hammel is a native of Marietta, Georgia. He graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Tech with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Hammel received his medical doctorate in 2011 from Emory University School of Medicine. He then trained for two years in plastic surgery at Southern Illinois University and completed a dermatology residency at the University of Iowa. Dr. Hammel additionally completed a two-year dermatological clinical research fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago as well as a Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch. His research includes work with Mohs micrographic surgery as well as the medical treatment of basal cell carcinoma, severe plaque psoriasis and eczema, and acne. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology and among the first ever group of Mohs surgeons to be board-certified in this specialy.

When asked his thoughts on having achieved the recognition of being double board-certified in his areas of expertise, Dr. Hammel says, “My goal is to provide patients with the highest level of dermatological care both surgically and medically, treating everything from common rashes to rare, complicated skin cancers. The certification from the American Board of Dermatology has validated my experience from over 3,000 Mohs surgeries and has formalized my skills in a way that is easy to communicate to new patients. I will continue serving those who are suffering from skin cancer and give each and every case that I come across the care and attention that they all deserve. Persons located in Georgia that have been diagnosed with skin cancer can visit our website to learn more about Micrographic Dermatologic Surgery. You can book an appointment with me directly so that I can help you overcome it.”

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. When detected and treated early, skin cancer is highly curable. This is one reason Dr. Hammel encourages patients to have their skin checked by a board-certified dermatologist annually. If skin cancer is found and Mohs micrographic surgery is recommended, our team encourages patients to find a board-certified Mohs surgeon for treatment.

Mohs surgery, named after Frederick E. Mohs, the surgeon who developed the technique, is a highly specialized surgery for treating skin cancer. Since its development, Mohs surgery has been refined into the most precise and advanced treatment for skin cancer, yielding success rates up to 98 percent. Today, Mohs surgery has come to be accepted as the single most effective technique for removing Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinomas (BCCs and SCCs), the two most common skin cancers. Mohs surgery is so effective because 100 percent of the surgical margins are evaluated, compared with only about 10 percent by traditional techniques.
