ZMall is a subsidiary of ETTA Solutions PLC, co-founded by long-time friends Temesgen Geberehiwot and Ambaye Michael Tesfay. The e-commerce and delivery platform is independently financed and managed. It runs alongside other ETTA solutions, including ETTA taxi – Ethiopia’s first taxi-hailing app, Shekla Music, and the fast-growing Odoo ERP system.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, redefining the consumer experience and turbocharging demand for the delivery of everything from groceries to restaurant meals, Temesgen and Ambaye saw this as an opportunity to promote the ZMall app and expand its ultra-fast delivery services throughout Ethiopia.
ZMall offers consumers a wide range of local restaurants allowing them to order a takeaway online using any Android or iOS mobile device. The app also allows users to order groceries directly from well-known supermarkets and pastry shops, buy beauty supplies and medicines, book courier services, and much more.
Our intuitive system allows online users to browse and compare menu options and prices, view the status of merchants, rate and reward, and take advantage of wallet top-ups thanks to the multiple payment systems we provide.
“Merchants working with ZMall can expect to increase their delivery orders by an average of 20%. Despite the economic downturn, we are experiencing rapid growth across all markets and hope to double our orders this year,” explains ETTA managing director and co-founder, Temesgen.
“ZMall has been a success story for everyone involved. We call our app Ethiopia’s virtual mall and plan on expanding our app to include online stores for service providers and products throughout the country. It’s gratifying to know that we are driving more business to our merchants.”
“Convenience and safety are two of the key selling points of our service. We also continue to work hard to make our service affordable for every customer by offering special deals and discounts. Our goal is to ensure that people throughout Ethiopia can find what they’re looking for on ZMall,” adds Temesgen.
Moreover, ZMall allows expatriates to place orders from around the world to their hometowns. ZMall also allows people living abroad to spoil their loved ones back home, handle their business, or ensure the delivery of important documents through our MasterCard payment getaway and visa card system, powered by Zemen bank.
“ZMall delivers your desired products at a fair price and, on average, within 30 minutes, typically via motorbikes. We prefer to use motorbikes for several reasons. They guarantee fast, on-time delivery as they can more easily negotiate heavy city traffic. They are also cheaper than vehicles, making them a viable option for youth interested in starting a courier business. It is more financially feasible for workers to settle their credit for a motorbike whether secured via micro finance or a traditional bank,” says Temesgen.
“We aim always to make work opportunities available to the youth. It was our motivation for shifting our model from hiring couriers who used motorbikes owned by ETTA to helping these delivery drivers finance their own brand-new motorcycles. We achieved this shift by partnering with local banks and microfinance institutions, empowering our youth while providing them a guaranteed income and work-based incentives as a ZMall driver.”
ZMall’s fleet of motorcycle delivery drivers has since expanded from 50 to 7,800 in response to the growing demand for its services in the six years since its launch.
The rapidly growing company works with over 170 stores to enable the online ordering of their services and products and showcases over 15,000 items in Addis Ababa alone. ZMall is set to expand to other regions of the country like Hawassa, Bahir Dar, and Adamma and eventually to other parts of East Africa in the future.
“It has always been my dream to build a company that provides tech solutions for everyday problems in Ethiopia and uplifts our community. Together with my partners, I look forward to establishing ZMall as Addis Ababa’s best delivery service and beyond. Our mission is to keep expanding, evolving, and satisfying more customers,” concludes Temesgen.
