Former CDC Directors: ‘RFK Jr is endangering Americans’ health’

Robert F Kennedy Jr has said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) needs to deliver on President Donald Trump’s ambitions.

Former leaders of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) went after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) in a recent NYT op-ed, condemning his policies including restricting vaccines, pulling funding for medical research, and firing thousands of healthcare workers (as broadcast on BBC Radio 4). This comes after the recent firing of CDC Director Dr Susan Monarez.

At least three senior CDC leaders, including Chief Medical Officer Debra Houry, have since resigned from the agency, some citing frustration over vaccine policy and the leadership of Kennedy, as the BBC has reported.

Looking at the eschewing conflict is leading public health and infectious disease expert Dr. Tyler B. Evans, who recently penned an op-ed for Men’s Health also criticising RFK’s anti-science rhetoric and decrying the politicization of healthcare.

Evans is an experienced and passionate infectious diseases and public health expert who has been on the front lines of major disease outbreaks (including two Ebola outbreaks) around the globe. Outside the U.S., he has mostly worked in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East with organizations like Doctors without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres) and Partners in Health. He was also the first Chief Medical Officer for New York City – leading the Office of Emergency Management’s (OEM) COVID-19 medical response.

Evans is critical of Kennedy’s dismantling of an established and generally effective system: “You have effectively broken down a system where experts are no longer telling us anything. As a result, people will start making their own decisions and people will get sicker.”

On the more specific topic of vaccines, Evans says: “We are playing with fire. Vaccination is not just a medical intervention; it is a social contract. When the credibility of the panel advising our immunization policies is undermined, that contract begins to unravel.”

With more advanced vaccines, Evans is concerned over Kennedy’s refusal to accep the scientific breakthroughs: “mRNA vaccines have been unfairly cast as a political wedge when they should be recognized as one of the greatest breakthroughs in modern medicine. They will likely be the first target. But this issue is not about mRNA alone.”

Evans is also concerned about the spread of misinformation, to the level where this could endanger lives: “When you sow doubt about the legitimacy of scientific consensus, that doubt spreads. Today it’s COVID-19, tomorrow it’s HPV, MMR, or the flu. We’re not just talking about numbers on a spreadsheet. We’re talking about preventable outbreaks, avoidable deaths, and growing disparities in who gets access to health.”

Evans is also critical of Kennedy’s lack of a scientific mindset, ignoring the established methods of reasoning and understanding: “Innovation cannot thrive in an environment where science is treated like opinion. If we show that evidence-based decision-making can be pushed aside for political convenience, we risk losing our strategic and moral footing as a public health leader.” Evans is the author of the new book Pandemics, Poverty, and Politics: Decoding the Social and Political Drivers of Pandemics from Plague to COVID-19 (Johns Hopkins Press). The book is an exploration of how socio-political factors like inequality and poverty exacerbate pandemics.
