The Elephant House, a lovely, welcoming coffee house, located on George IV Bridge Street in Edinburgh, Scotland, opened in 1996.
This homey, inviting establishment hugs you as you walk in with its laid back warm atmosphere and quiet buzz of conversation. It’s a great place to relax for a few hours by yourself or meet up with a bunch of friends and eat and chat over one of the big wooden tables.
The aroma of coffee brewing and smells of home-made food tickle your senses as you wait to be served and view the extensive menu filled with goodies – all yours to choose from.
If you wander through to the cosy sitting and eating area at the back with its views of Edinburgh castle you’ll understand why this special place was the source of inspiration for writers such as J.K. Rowling, who sat writing some of her early novels there and why it became a chosen coffee house of Ian Rankin and Alexander McCall-Smith amongst others who frequent this place.
So, over a coffee, hot chocolate, a pot of tea, a scrumptious cake or pastry or a bowl of home-made soup or baked potato, you can easily while a way a morning or afternoon.
If you’ve children with you, that’s fine too. There is a menu for kids and the can also busy themselves creatively while your enjoying your time there.
And of course, you have to visit the ladies or gents. However, make sure your friends know you’ll be away for a while.
This will not be a quick visit to the loo, since there is quite a bit of reading to do while you wash your hands and freshen up.
Perhaps, like J.K. Rowling, you’ll get some writing done too.
