U2 Leads Grammy Nominations

BEVERLY HILLS (voa) – This year’s Grammy Awards nominations have been announced, with the Irish rockers U2 leading with eight nominations, including best album, best record, and song of the year.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences made the Grammy Awards nomination announcements Friday, in a Beverly Hills, California, ceremony. The awards will be presented February 27 in Los Angeles.

India.Arie and her debut album Acoustic Soul landed the second largest number of Grammy nominations – seven – including best album, best record, and song of the year, as well as best new artist.

Canadian Nelly Furtado, received Grammy nominations for song of the year (I’m Like a Bird), pop vocal album, new artist and female pop vocal performance.
Classical conductor Pierre Boulez drew six Grammy nominations, as did Alicia Keys for her debut album and song Fallin.

Along with U2 and India.Arie, best album of the year Grammy nominations also went to Bob Dylan, the rap group Outkast, and a collection of artists for the soundtrack to the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou?

The Grammy nominations cover a wide range of musical interests, including jazz, rock, rap, pop, rhythm and blues, country, classical, and a number of Latin music categories. Within each category, there are Grammy nominations for best male and female performers, vocal and instrumental performances, as well as others. There are also Grammy awards for composing, arranging, and songwriting.

This year’s Grammy nominations cover recordings released from October 1, 2000, through September 30, 2001. Recordings may sometimes be eligible for – and win – awards in separate years. An example is U2, which won Grammy awards for best record and song, last year, for the same album, All That You Can’t Leave Behind. It is also nominated for awards this year.

This year’s Grammy Awards mark the 44th year that honors have been bestowed by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
