DigiScents, Inc. will sponsor activities for children on “National Sense
of Smell Day,” on Saturday, April 29, 2000, at the Lawrence Hall of
Science in Berkeley, California. DigiScents, the pioneer of digital
scent technology, 16 participating museums and science centres around
the United States and the Olfactory Research Fund, Ltd. co-sponsor
“National Sense of Smell Day.”
“Exposing kids to the smells of different places and foods is a terrific
way to expose them to the diverse cultures of the world,” states
DigiScents’ CEO, Joel Bellenson. “Scent is the most evocative of all the
senses. The sense of smell is closely tied to memory and emotion, making
scent a powerful way to reinforce ideas. If a picture is worth a
thousand words, a scent is worth a thousand pictures.”
Terry Molnar, Director, Olfactory Research Fund, adds: “‘National Sense
of Smell Day’ is a way to create awareness of the role that smell plays
in our lives and how it improves our quality of life. In the case of
DigiScents, with the odor coming out of the computer, it adds another
dimension and can
make a more pleasant or meaningful experience.”
The DigiScents-sponsored activities are aimed at getting kids in touch
with the fun side of scent and include:
- Whiffing at the scent bar a variety of scents, from bubblegum to green
apple to haunted house
- Multimedia presentations about the olfactory system and iSmell(TM)
digital scent technology
- Decorating and marking favourite smells on a giant scent graph
Playing with scented clay
- Creating smell poetry
- Distributing scented highlighters and smell-centric magnetic poetry to
visitors
