Fox News is reporting that according to Memphis police, the two people, a man, and a woman, said they had “snorted some heroin” in a nearby Walgreens.
Someone driving along South Pauline Street and Eastmoreland Avenue around 3:30 p.m. saw the couple lying on the street and called 911. Memphis fire crew emergency responders were able to revive the two illegal drug users and the husband and wife were taken to a local hospital in noncritical condition.
Social media user Courtland Garner posted a Live video of the incident on his Facebook page, showing the two sprawled on the sidewalk and onlookers commenting on them. The language of the onlookers is very graphic, so be warned.
“What they were doing was children things. It was a spectacle. It made me laugh. They can help themselves,” said Garner, as quoted by ABC affiliate WNEP16. “I know for a fact all the kids are on social media, and when kids see that video, you know what they are going to say? I don’t want to look stupid like that I don’t want to do those drugs.”
The whole idea of videotaping people passed out or unconscious after overdosing on heroin is the latest rage going around today, and quite frankly, I think it is disgusting. And here’s what is even worse – How do you think the children or parents of these junkies feel when they see their relative plastered all over social media sites for all the world to see?
While I have said that social media is bringing the extent of the heroin epidemic in this country into our living rooms, at the same time, I really don’t know that this is going to make a difference in the drug users that need their daily fix. I was pleasantly surprised by the comments accompanying the video. Here are just a few of the hundreds that were posted:
One young man wrote: “Dumb, people wanna do drugs and act stupid, let them. They wanna take a chance of overdosing and dying, let them. No one else made the choice but the person taking the drugs.”
A young lady wrote: “This makes me fucking sick it’s not funny at all! Instead of getting help disgusting people sit there an laugh at them ., glad to see our country is going to shit people don’t even know how to have sympathy anymore but if it was one of their family members wouldn’t b to funny huh?”
But a big majority of the comments were more like this one: ” Do you not have any empathy for these sick people? Your attitude is a root problem of the social upheaval our country is experiencing. If we can’t help our fellow Americans, who will? If these two people were having heart attacks, would you bully them or get help?”
What do you think about all this?
