Review: Tunnel to Towers honors fallen firefighter killed on September 11 (Includes first-hand account)

This marks the 17th annual race in the “Big Apple,” and it follows Siller’s heroic steps prior to his passing during the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. Similar to previous years, this event is consistently well-attended. In 2002, this race started with 1,500 people, and today, it is considered one of the top 5K races in the United States.

Participants begin the race at 9:30 a.m. at the Hugh Carey Tunnel in Brooklyn, which was formerly known as the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, and they end it at the former site of the Twin Towers (World Trade Center).

The route is five kilometers, and it honors the moments that the firefighter left his fire truck in Brooklyn and ran through the tunnel towards the Twin Towers after the terrorist attacks; moreover, it pays tribute to the 343 firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians who passed away on September 11, 2001.

The proceeds raised from the Tunnel to Towers Race benefit injured service members, first responders, as well as wounded veterans in the U.S. armed forces.
