On Tuesday, February 11th, this journalist had the chance to dine at Okaru in Roslyn, New York, for dinner.
This new Long Island restaurant opened three weeks ago, and it infuses both a raw, authentic, and refined sensibility with Japandi (a minimalist interior design style that combines Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics) style to create a modern Zen vibe.
Particularly impressive about Okaru is that it features several dining areas, which includes a Chef’s table, Omakase, a sushi bar, private dining rooms, and an outdoor patio for when the weather is warmer. Chef Marc Spitzer serves as the executive chef.

Hot appetizers
As an hors d’oeuvre, one should try their “Chicken Katsu Steamed Bun,” which consists of Daikon sprouts, salted cucumber, and Tonkatsu sauce.

Their “Tuna Crispy Rice” was indeed crispy, and served with Gochujang (red chili paste), serrano chili, and topped with scallions.

A healthy choice for an additional appetizer is their “Cauliflower Karaage,” which features Sake soy marinade, creamy Japanese mustard, and spicy Chili Miso.

Salad
A noteworthy salad choice is their “Crispy Duck Confit,” which is sheer bliss. The duck was tender, and it came with Blood orange miso, pickled Tokyo turnips, and Yuzu vinaigrette.

Entrée
Meat lovers, especially those that enjoy steak, should get their “Grilled Wagyu Skirt Steak,” which was juicy and tender. It is served with Whiskey caramelized cipollini onions, black garlic, and their crispy grilled brussels sprouts.

Desserts
For people that have a sweet tooth, they ought to try their “Chocolate Meltdown,” which has Espresso Ice Cream and Creme Fraiche, which was rich and creamy.

In addition, their “Japanese Whiskey Bread Pudding” was quite savory, and it came with vanilla ice cream, and macerated currants, along with the Japanese whiskey sauce.

Each of their dishes had a stunning presentation to it, which was artistic and creative.
The Verdict
Overall, Okaru is a delightful and pleasant new eatery in Roslyn on Long Island, which is tastefully designed and decorated.
It has a warm, cozy, and sophisticated ambiance to it, and its eclectic cuisine is exquisite. It manages to stay true to the flavors, ingredients, and the textures of the Japanese culture; moreover, there is an elegance to it like no other.
There is always something new to try at Okaru due to its elaborate menu of Japanese-inspired offerings. Okaru is worth checking out with the entire family, and it garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. Well done.
