Researchers recommend an apple a day for those over 50

Researchers said Tuesday that eating an apple a day would provide all the cardiovascular benefits of cholesterol-lowering statins, but without any of the side effects.

While the report is not based on direct scientific study, the article brings up the important point that more than two-thirds of adults don’t get their suggested five servings of fruit and vegetables a day. And while nine out of 10 adults do manage to get at least one serving a day, they can all benefit by eating more. CBC’s statistics say that 41 percent of Canadians aged 12 and up do not eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

Just one extra serving a day, according to Dr. Adam Briggs, could apparently prevent 11,000 vascular deaths.

The extra serving needn’t even be apples, though they are extremely healthy.

“Apples have long been known as a natural source of antioxidants and chemical compounds called flavanoids, all of which are good for our health and wellbeing,” said Dr. Peter Coleman of the Stroke Association.
