In a healthcare landscape often dominated by reactive models and limited access for marginalized communities, one woman is shifting the paradigm globally. Oge Akinola, an internationally recognized maternal wellness expert, is the founder of The Mothers’ Hub, a digital and community-driven platform transforming the way women prepare for, experience, and recover from motherhood.
An innovation born from experience and expertise
Akinola is no newcomer to global health. Her professional background includes over 15 years in international development, health advocacy, and maternal wellness. She began her career with Save the Children UK, where she led high-level policy, funding, and community health initiatives. She holds an Executive MBA from Imperial College Business School in London, a Master’s in Peace and Conflict Resolution from the University of Bradford, and multiple certifications in fitness, nutrition, pre- and post-natal wellness, obesity and diabetes care.
Her work is now anchored in The Mothers’ Hub, a platform designed to offer a whole-person approach to maternal wellness that reaches women in all seasons of life, including preconception, pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause, and beyond.
The Mothers’ Hub difference
The Mothers’ Hub is not just another wellness brand. Its mission is rooted in equity, advocacy, and preventative care. Built around three strategic pillars — preconception wellness to motherhood, maternal health equity, and whole-life women’s wellness — it equips women with the tools to proactively manage their health and well-being before, during, and after pregnancy.
Unlike traditional care models that often begin only after a woman is pregnant, The Mothers’ Hub focuses on prevention and empowerment. From health education to community support, the platform guides women to become active participants in their own care. Its holistic approach integrates body, mind, and spirit, addressing overlooked transitions like miscarriage recovery, emotional readiness, and perimenopausal health.
The PRS Index: a game-changer in maternal wellness
Akinola’s flagship innovation, the PRS Index (Preconception Readiness Score), is a breakthrough assessment tool designed to help women evaluate their readiness for pregnancy across eight pillars of wellness, ranging from physical metrics and nutrition to hormonal balance and spiritual preparedness.
What sets the PRS Index apart is its ability to provide a personalized, data-informed roadmap to optimize a woman’s health before conception. The tool is currently being rolled out in hospitals across Abia State, Nigeria, and at a private practice in Maryland, USA, with many more healthcare providers expressing strong interest in adopting it.
“Policy change is undoubtedly needed to improve access to healthcare for all women in the United States,” says Dr. Ujuka Iloubachi, Partner & OB/GYN. “However, as we wait for systemic changes, tools like Oge’s PRS Index offer an immediate and impactful alternative.”
The PRS Index is already influencing conversations around early intervention in maternal care and is being considered for integration into public health research and preventative care strategies in both developed and developing regions.
From tragedy to transformation
Akinola’s mission is personal. After witnessing the stillbirth of her sister’s baby at eight months, she turned grief into action. That moment deepened her commitment to ensuring that no woman walks through motherhood uninformed or unsupported.
Her lived experience, combined with her global insight, became the foundation for a new approach to maternal care, one that blends clinical innovation, policy advocacy, and community-building.
Advancing health equity through innovation
Through The Mothers’ Hub, Akinola is confronting racial and socioeconomic disparities in maternal health, particularly for Black women and underserved populations. The platform offers culturally competent support, integrating multilingual resources, and access to programs that meet women where they are — digitally and in person.
Akinola’s vision extends beyond The Mothers’ Hub’s virtual presence. Plans are underway to launch physical wellness centers that serve as safe, nurturing community spaces, and a Maternal Wellness Coaching Academy to train a new generation of advocates and practitioners.
A global leader in preventative maternal care
Oge Akinola’s contributions to maternal health are not only timely but transformative. Her innovative tools and holistic approach are empowering women globally to take charge of their wellness before pregnancy begins. Her work is also actively informing health policy, medical practice, and wellness culture, making her a leading voice in the movement for maternal health equity.
As the PRS Index and The Mothers’ Hub continue to expand across borders, one thing is clear: the future of maternal care is proactive, personalized, and powerfully led by women like Oge Akinola.
