Recall of beef, veal, bison products linked to E. coli outbreak

The products under the recall were processed by Athol, Massechuttes-based Adams Farm Slaughterhouse from animals slaughtered between July 15, 25, and 27, 2016 and August 26, 2016, and further processed and packed on various dates between July 21, and September 22, 2016.

The recalled products include 27 different lots of raw meat that include veal, beef, and bison, from whole carcasses, to everything in between and on down to ground veal, beef, and bison. The meats were shipped to farmer’s markets, retail locations, and restaurants in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and eastern New York, as well as possibly being distributed into neighboring states.

Seven people in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia have confirmed infections with the outbreak strain of E. coli O157:H7, with the onset of illnesses ranging from June 27, 2016, to September 4, 2016. Traceback information on five of the cases indicated that all five had consumed beef products supplied by Adams Farms Slaughterhouse.

FSIS was first notified of the investigation into the E.coli outbreak on September 16, 2016, and has been working hand-in-hand with the Connecticut Department of Public Health, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has determined there is a link between the illnesses and Adams Farm Slaughterhouse.

Consumers are warned to check their freezers for these recalled products. Do not cook them or in any way consume them. Either return them to the place of purchase or put the product in a sealed bag in the trash so that children, pets, or other animals can’t eat it.

When retail locations where these recalled products were sold becomes available, they will be posted on the FSIS website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls. Consumers with questions regarding the recall can contact Ed Maltby, General Manager of Adams Farm Slaughterhouse at (978) 249-9441 x 105.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
