SEATTLE — RealNetworks Inc. is launching RealArcade, a platform for downloading and playing computer games.
RealNetworks, which hopes to reach a mainstream audience of game buyers online, has worked with more than 40 game developers and publishers on the project — including Zombie Entertainment, GameHouse, WEB Corp. and Daydream Software.
RealArcade aims to compete with on- and off-line retailers that sell CD-ROM versions of games. It offers more than 120 games, including five that are exclusive to the platform. Free samples are available, along with the option to download full games for $9.99 to $19.99.
Web-based games will also be available free on RealArcade.
The platform was made available to developers in March, but consumers will be able to access the service for the first time in mid-May.
The system allows users to easily store and play games or access user manuals, customer reviews or tips. They also will be able to chat or play with other gamers online.
The retailer also has an area called Games Bazaar where game developers can self-publish games for free download. RealNetworks hopes to profit from advertising built into the games.
RealNetworks, which launched a games page to test the market, said more than 4 million users have downloaded games from its Web site in the past year.
