Re-engineering Men’s Publishing In The UK

Yes, of course men like women and looking at them and what is wrong with
that
anyway? Let’s face it if we didn’t then the human race would be in some
difficulty. Yes ‘men like women’, agreed. But so what and what is new? What
harm is done if some men’s magazines in the UK are harmlessly feeding one of
the basic desires of mankind. They are simply providing British men with the
chance to enjoy and appreciate a great looking girl. However things have
gone a little over the top over here. The fact that men’s magazines are
moving higher towards the top shelf, does not mean all British men should
instantly be branded as lecherous animals. As has been the case. It is about
time we men in Britain put one or two things straight.

There are approximately 10 million guys in the UK who potentially could read
a men’s magazine. If you look at how many men there actually are reading the
‘babe style mag.’ it represents only a small proportion of the male magazine
reading population (a figure in the region of 20%). Or to put it another way
approximately 80% of men do not actually read the babe style magazine. The
fact that they choose to ignore them is a statement in itself. It is very
sad that men in the UK have been subsequently stereotyped as babe crazy.

Men have just had some seriously bad press over the past few years. Some
people really think we need to take a magazine into bed so that we can make
love to our partners. It is about time we changed all that and told people
the truth. Saying that we just like magazines because of their babes is akin
to saying that all women are hair mad just because you will find articles on
hairstyles in the women’s press. No, enough is enough. Forgotten are the
hundreds of great magazines that men have been enjoying for decades;
magazines from current affairs to restoring your own MG in the back garden.
Forgotten is the fact that men do actually enjoy reading books, poetry and
newspapers and have been doing so for years.

There are interesting times ahead for men, arguably all over the world, that
are looking for a new type of read. Men out there all know it is long
overdue. There is only so much that one can say about sex, vanity, wealth,
and desire and then one inevitably runs out of things to say. In the end
these topics are simply quick fixes to hide the real focus of life. The fool
goes quiet when he has run out of things to say. The wise man remains quiet
because he knows when to speak. There is a difference. Now is the time to
speak and for men to have their say.

Men’s Quest was launched nationally to the UK news trade on the 15th April
2000. For further information contact: Angus Kennedy at: ak@mensquest.com
