Participant in 12th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge passes away

Raleigh, N.C. was the home of the 12th annual Krispy Kreme Challenge. During the February 6, 2016 event, a man complained of chest pains a mile in.

A 58-year-old man reported having chest pains within the first mile of the race, the Krispy Kreme Challenge confirmed on Facebook.

The man was transported by ambulance to Rex Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

North Carolina State University organizes the Krispy Kreme Challenge. It benefits the North Carolina Children’s Hospital.

The Krispy Kreme Challenge Facebook page published an update alerting its followers of the situation.

Part of the Facebook statement reads, We are deeply saddened and wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones.

The name of the 58-year-old has not been released. The challenge began in December 2004 by North Carolina State undergraduates.

2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour. The mantra of the Krispy Kreme Challenge epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude. What started as a challenge among ten friends has transformed into a nationally publicized charity race, and the number one tradition to complete before graduating from North Carolina State University.
