A simple beginning brings spectacular success: Balducci’s story begins
in 1915 on a street corner in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, New
York. It was here that Louis “Pop” Balducci, a young immigrant from the
coastal town of Bari in southern Italy, opened his first fruit and
vegetable stand.
By 1946, Pop’s business (and passion for fine foods) had outgrown the
stand, and he and his son Andy opened the original Balducci’s store in
Greenwich Village. The store expanded department by department to meet
the needs and tastes of the immediate community until its success
ultimately forced the business to obtain a much larger location within
the neighbourhood.
Today, Balducci’s is hailed as a New York institution and a world-famous
epicurean landmark. But to them, Balducci’s represents their roots and
family. Balducci’s has thrived for three generations and is continuing
to evolve. It is now able to offer home-cooked heritage to families and
tables across the country through Balducci.com.
