Nationwide ground beef recall for possible E. coli contamination

The beef products are sold under the Marketside Butcher and Thomas Farms brands and were shipped to Walmart and other retailers nationwide, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced on Friday.

This recall is a USDA Class I recall. This means it is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.

The products subject to recall were produced on June 1, 2020, and bear establishment number “EST. 46841” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail locations nationwide. The problem was discovered during a routine FSFS inspection, and there has been no reports of illness due to the consumption of these products.

The products subject to this recall have a “use or freeze by” date of 6/25/20, 6/27/20, or 7/01/20, depending on the brand and package size. If you have any of this meat in your refrigerator or freezer, do not eat it. Return it to the place of purchase or throw it away.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism. This bacteria also has the potential to cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition affecting the blood vessels that can lead to kidney failure and death.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
