Nationwide chocolate candy recall due to Salmonella contamination

An announcement posted on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website on Friday night announced the voluntary nationwide recall by Asher’s Chocolates/Lewistown, Inc., an affiliated partner of Chester A. Asher Inc.

The recall covers chocolate candies only produced at the company’s Lewistown facility, according to the announcement. No products manufactured by C.A. Asher Inc./Asher’s Chocolate Co. of Souderton, PA are involved in this recall. No illnesses have been reported from consumption of these products at this time.

The possible contamination in the products was found after a sample from routine testing by the company revealed the presence of Salmonella in a group of products. Customers who have purchased any of the recalled products are urged to not consume them.

Jeff Asher, President, and CEO of Asher’s stated, “The safety and well-being of our customers is our primary concern, and we are taking this incident very seriously. In our 124 years of business, we have never previously detected Salmonella in our testing. We are working and cooperating fully with the U. S. Food & Drug Administration on this voluntary recall.”

The recalled products include over 40 different Asher’s brand chocolate candies and snack items. The recalled items can be identified by the UPC production code printed on the side of the label. For a complete listing of the recalled products, please go HERE.

Consumers should contact Customer Service to arrange for return of the recalled product and a refund. Customer Service can be contacted by email at customerservice@lewistownashers.com or by calling 888-288-3880 between 9AM and 5PM Eastern Time, Monday – Friday.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
