McDonald’s customers soon will place orders by computer

McDonald’s Canada will be first to introduce the new, do-it-yourself ordering style.
On the surface, self-serve kiosk stations may lead one to believe the plan will also result in a cutback of staff. On the contrary, however, McDonald’s Canada also plans to introduce hosts and hostesses, along with dedicated wait staff responsible for bringing guests their orders.
McDonald’s Canada president and chief executive officer John Betts estimates some 15,000 jobs will be created as a result of the new kiosk ordering, and table side service program.
With the new ordering medium also comes additional menu options. Guests will now have the opportunity to create custom order hamburgers with a new range of toppings including fried mushrooms, guacamole and sriracha sauce.
About 30 new burger options will be made available, including five different kinds of cheeses and about 12 toppings.
Company executives estimate that most of the 1,400 Canada McDonald’s locations will be successfully overhauled by 2017.
Costs to install the kiosk and change up the menu is about $200,000 per store, and company officials insist menu prices will not be raised as a result of the store upgrades.
