NEW YORK (voa) – American singer Mariah Carey has accepted a record $28 million payment from her record company — but not for the usual reason record stars make millions.
The EMI Music Group said Wednesday it is making the payment to end its relationship with the singer after just one album.
EMI’s Virgin Records signed Carey to a multi-record deal last April that was reportedly worth 100-million dollars. But Carey’s sole album for the company — “Glitter”, the soundtrack to her movie of the same name — sold a disappointing 500,000 copies, far less than the millions her albums usually sell.
Carey also suffered a nervous breakdown last July that prevented her from doing some promotion work on the album and the movie.
Before Wednesday’s release, EMI had already paid Carey $21 million on the contract — giving her a total of $49 million for just nine months work.
