MANCHESTER (voa) – Olympic champion Simon Whitfield of Canada made the most of the 10-kilometer run on his way to winning the men’s triathlon in one hour, 51 minutes and 57 seconds. Miles Stewart of Australia took silver, while Hamish Carter of New Zealand won the bronze.

His fellow-Canadian Carol Montgomery took the women’s gold 20 seconds ahead of Leanda Cave of Wales, in a time of two hours, three minutes and 18 seconds. Nicole Hackett of Australia took bronze.

Thomas touched the wall in two minutes, 8.40 seconds Sunday to win her fourth gold of the Games. England’s Georgie Lee took the silver, while the bronze went to Margaretha Pedder. Thomas picked up another gold medal as she led Australia to the title in the women’s 4 x 100-meter medley relay.

World record-holder and world champion Grant Hackett of Australia cruised to victory in the 1,500 meter freestyle final, picking up the gold in 14 minutes and 54.29 seconds. Scotland’s Graeme Smith held off Aussie Craig Stevens for the silver. In other events, Roland Schoeman of South Africa captured gold in the men’s 50-meter freestyle, Jim Piper of Australia won the men’s 200-meter breaststroke, and his countrywoman Jennifer Reilly took the title in the women’s 400-meter individual medley.

Australian Ian Thorpe won his sixth gold medal at Manchester to match compatriot Susie O’Neill as the most successful swimmers ever at the Commonwealth Games. Thorpe also became the first man to win an aggregate 10 Commonwealth golds, as he anchored Australia’s 4 x 100-meter medley relay team to victory Sunday in the last event of the Games swim meet.

The 19-year-old did not reach his goal of seven gold medals, which would have tied the record set in the pool by American Mark Spitz at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Thorpe placed second to countryman Matt Welsh in the 100-meter backstroke Saturday, but had already won gold in the 100, 200 and 400-meter individual races as well as the 4 x 100 and four-by-200 team relays.
