Beauty standards become higher and higher everyday, but arguably no city is more into beauty than Los Angeles. One of the most noticeable things about a person is their hair, and finding the right stylist comes down to trust and reputation. Los Angeles is known for its amazing hair stylists, and it can be challenging to break into a very saturated market.

Hairstylist Jason Hermiz started his journey by completing apprenticeships in New York City, Chicago and Toronto, and has been making his mark in Los Angeles for the past eight years. Having more than 17 years of experience, Hermiz is now one of the lead stylists at Martinez-Samuel Salon in West Hollywood. Although Hermiz works with some of the city’s top celebrities and entertainers, he remains humble and focused with a genuine love for his work.

“In my early twenties, I knew I needed to figure out my career path. I was struggling and had no money,” said Hermiz. He said he realized how much he loved the vibe and energy of a hair salon, so he decided to pursue an apprenticeship to learn the craft. Now, his specialty is doing women’s blonde, Balayage, highlights and men’s haircuts. “Blondes and men’s haircuts are my favorites,” he said.

One of Hermiz’s favorite parts about being a hairstylist is the creativity. As for his goals for the future, he hopes to expand his clientele and business. He would love to have his own salon eventually, where he can create a space for clients to relax where there is not a pretentious feel. The key to having a successful career is being passionate about the work and never giving up.

“As I really put my heart into it, I really developed a passion for it,” said Hermiz. “If you really love doing hair, stick with it and it’ll happen but you have to really want it and hustle for it.”
