Digital Journal — Contrary to the popular Beatles song, love isn’t all you need, at least not for Sir Paul McCartney and his wife, Heather Mills McCartney. The two have decided to separate, amicably, after being married for four years.
The couple issued a joint statement saying the split was caused, at least in part, on media intrusion. Though the Daily Mirror, which broke the story of their separation, quoted McCartney’s friends who claim the British superstar was getting impatient with his younger wife.
“He was tired of her suggesting makeovers for him. Just an old hippie at heart, he also resented her ban on the spliffs (joints) he used to enjoy so much,” the Mirror said.
According to the Mirror, McCartney’s three adult children from his first marriage, including fashion designer Stella, had also urged him to leave Mills McCartney.
McCartney is listed as Britain’s wealthiest entertainer. His fortune is estimated at ₤825 million, the equivalent of about $2.03 billion (US). Last year alone, McCartney earned $120 million (US).
Reports say the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement, allowing Mills access to up to $376 million (US) of McCartney’s fortune. Interestingly enough, some media is claiming Mills McCartney insisting she married the music legend simply for his money.
But McCartney issued a public statement Wednesday denying rumours his wife was a gold-digger. In a message on his website, McCartney defended Mills.
“It’s been suggested that she married me for the money and there is not an ounce of truth in this,” he wrote. “She is a very generous person who spends most of her time trying to help others in greater need than herself. All the work she does is unpaid so these stories are ridiculous and completely unfounded.”
McCartney, 63, and Mills McCartney, 37, have a two-year-old daughter, Beatrice. The couple wed in 2002, four years after McCartney’s first wife, Linda, passed away from breast cancer. They were married for 29 years.
