Food sabotage possible in recall of chicken products

According to the FSIS notification, this recall is considered a Class 1, High Health Risk. The chicken products were produced on various dates from June 6 to June 9, 2016, and distributed nationwide.

The company discovered that sand and black soil was turning up in some of its products and reported this to the FSIS immediately. There have been no adverse reactions to the contaminated products. Law enforcement has been called into the investigation over fears of sabotaging the food production process.

Many readers might recall that on March 11, 2016, Digital Journal reported on another case of possible sabotage at a Wayne Farms LLC chicken processing facility in Laurel, Mississippi on March 3. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Inspector General (IG) stepped in to lead the investigation that is still ongoing.

According to the U.S. Code § 1365 tampering with consumer products is a federal offense. If this has happened, the perpetrator could be fined and imprisoned for up to 10 years. Food safety laws governing consumer products in the United States are put there for a reason, and that is to protect the American public, so this possible threat will be taken seriously.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “P-322” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped for food service and retail distribution nationwide. Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Jane Kalthoff, Customer Representative Supervisor, at (800) 328-2838.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
