It’s past midnight. You’re wide awake, possibly drunk, and you’re starving. Suddenly, you get a craving. You want a hot dog. Suddenly, you get another craving. You want a piece of fried chicken. Oh, the agony and torture. Which will you go with? Which delightful piece of sodium and cholesterol filled processed heaven will you chose? Well, that decision just might get a little easier thanks to fast food restaurant chain KFC’s new “Double Down Dog.”
I know what you’re thinking: “A hot dog at KFC? I thought they only sold chicken?” Don’t worry. Instead of buns, this hot dog is drizzled with a gooey cheese sauce and wrapped in a piece of fried chicken. It’s very similar to the original Double Down Sandwich the restaurant released several years ago, which was basically just a bacon and cheese sandwich with two pieces of fried chicken instead of buns.
Now, before you get too excited, the Double Down Dog is currently only available in the Philippines. Select restaurants in the Philippines will get 50 Double Down Dogs for two days and, according to various reports, the chain has no plans to add the item to its regular menu in the United States or elsewhere.
Despite the sandwich’s seemingly short run, however, it has been gaining quite a bit of attention. Social media users took to the internet to joke about the latest KFC masterpiece, which was probably not a bad thing for the restaurant chain, considering the free publicity and advertising they got out of it.
When the restaurant released its original Double Down sandwich back in 2010, health advocates criticized it for its low nutritional value and it seems that critics are saying the same about the new hot dog. But one thing is for certain and that is that the new Double Down Dog has people talking.
