By Hamish Bowles, with essays by Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr., Rachel Lambert Mellon, and Hamish Bowles, 2001.
This beautifully illustrated book celebrates the fortieth anniversary of Jacqueline Kennedy’s emergence as America’s first lady and explores her enduring global influence on style and fashion.
Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years: Selections from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, May 1, 2001–July 29, 2001.
An in-depth look at the clothes and the era demonstrates how Jacqueline Kennedy became the beacon of style, whose legacy is still with us today.
The Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute special exhibition of some eighty original costumes and accessories from the collection of the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum in Boston is featuring clothing worn by Jacqueline Kennedy on the campaign trail, during the inaugural festivities, at the White House itself, and on state visits around the world.
Among the many highlights are the celebrated pillbox hat and fawn coat Mrs. Kennedy wore for the inaugural ceremonies on the steps of the Capitol; the regal ivory satin gown she wore to the pre-Inaugural Gala; the beaded evening gown in which she dazzled Nikita Khrushchev; and the red wool suit she wore for her televised Valentine’s Day tour of the White House.
“The White House Years” book presents a selection of gowns, suits, dresses, and accessories from the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum against a backdrop of personal notes, artifacts, and anecdotes provided by such White House insiders as historian Arthur M. Schlesinger Jr. and horticulturalist and friend of the first lady, Rachel Lambert Mellon.
Combining original and new photography, the volume presents images of the first lady that have rarely been seen, as well as photographs that have become a part of the national consciousness.
This unique perspective on the Kennedy White House years reveals the impact Jacqueline Kennedy had on the world, on America’s vision of itself, and on the role played by the first lady in the life of the nation.
