When people think of high-performing individuals, they often think of those who lead companies, work in law enforcement, or work in intensive emergency care settings. What they might not consider is the reality of what everyday people, such as caregivers and leaders, experience.
Barbara Gustavson is one of those people. As someone who experienced emotional exhaustion as a result of several life-changing moments, including the loss of her mother and becoming her father’s caretaker, she quickly began to understand that what looked manageable from the outside slowly became overwhelming on the inside.
However, when Gustavson learned about the importance of brain health through Dr. Daniel Amen and the Amen Clinic, everything clicked. That shift gave her the clarity to build Discover Next Step, not just to help others through emotional burnout, but also to help them experience that same turning point.
Defining moments and shifting legacies
Gustavson says that a defining moment in her life came one Thanksgiving, when her father slid a newspaper across the table with a stark headline that read “ANCESTRY DOT BOMB.” That sole headline exposed years of hidden family history, which included dark secrets and even medical issues that ran in her family.
“In that moment, everything shifted,” Gustavson said. “It became my wake-up call to take brain health seriously and change the legacy I would pass on.”
As someone who holds a degree in psychology, Gustavson is aware that brain health is important. Because of this, she longs to spread the word about brain-friendly resets that change how people care for themselves before they reach their breaking points.
Big challenges and the REGROUP framework
Gustavson’s biggest challenge was trying to be everything for everyone. During her most intense years of caregiving, she spent hours driving to help her dad, all while raising her sons, teaching, and building a business from the ground up.
“I reached burnout more than once, and it took a toll,” Gustavson shares.
The turning point came when she learned that pushing harder wasn’t the solution, but regrouping was. To challenge herself to overcome her obstacles, she began to create micro-resets, boundaries, and brain-friendly rhythms to help her restore her energy and think more clearly.
Those experiences became the foundation of the REGROUP Framework, which weaves together grounded insights and practical steps to remind people that they are not alone in life, and that they can begin to live from a place of alignment, focus, and deep connection.
Aspirations for the future
Barbara Gustavson knows that her framework can help change lives, which is in part why she strives to spread its message to as many people as she can.
“I envision REGROUP growing into a national movement that changes how caregivers, leaders, and helping professionals take care of themselves,” Gustavson says. “It offers a practical, brain-friendly way to prevent burnout and stay connected to what matters instead of waiting until something breaks.”
Gustavson’s book, REGROUP: How to Reset Your Mind so You Can Unlock Hidden Energy, Enjoy Productive Peace, and Feel Like Yourself Again, outlines the way one can use the REGROUP method to not just catch themselves before they reach burnout, but also work with their brain rather than against it.
