Highlights From Toronto Restaurant Blitz

Toronto, Canada – Toronto Public Health today released highlights of week
twelve (May 15-19) of the restaurant inspection blitz. During week twelve a
total of 451 restaurants were inspected across the city – 258 restaurants in
the downtown blitz area, and 193 throughout the rest of the City. After
initial inspection, 29 percent of restaurants in the blitz area and 52
percent of restaurants in the rest of the city were in full compliance. A
total of 98 percent of the food premises were in complete compliance after
the second inspection.

Five restaurants were closed and charges are pending against eight premises
as a result of inspections during week 12. All of the following restaurants
were closed for both a mouse infestation and sanitation violations:

  • Shanghai Weston Garden Restaurant, 1804 Weston Road, closed May 16,
    re-opened May 18.
  • The Ying Fung Restaurant, 1089 Weston Road, closed May 17, re-opened May
    24.
  • Louie’s Pizza, 436 Dundas Street East, closed My 17, re-opened May 18.
  • Bon Apetit Bread and Pizza, 654 Landsdowne Avenue, closed May 17.
  • CND Pizza and Wings, 1236 Bloor Street West, closed May 18.

    The following restaurants will be charged: Tim Hortons Donuts, 1170
    Bay Street, will be charged for sanitation violations, improper dishwasher
    temperatures, and food storage violations. Pizza Pizza, 494 Bloor Street
    West, will be charged for food temperature violations, and lack of
    thermometer in cold storage unit. Tony Roma’s Famous for Ribs, 10 Carlson
    Court, will be charged for food sanitation violations and equipment
    violations.

    Country Style Donuts, 44 Gerrard Street West, will be charged for sanitation
    and food storage violations. Coffee Prime, 4660 Kingston Road, will be
    charged for failure to provide hot water in wash basin. Colonel Wong, 2825
    Bathurst Street, will be charged for sanitation violations.
    Sir Robert L. Borden School (cafeteria), 200 Poplar Road, will be charged
    for sanitation violations and failure to prevent entrance of rodents.

    My Sub, 1284 Bloor Street West, will be charged for sanitation violations
    and failure to provide soap in public washrooms. Since the blitz began on
    February 22, 2000, 40 food premises have been closed and 65 food premises
    have been charged or have charges pending.

    As of May 21, 3,946 food premises have been inspected city wide.

    On May 29, the Board of Health will discuss Toronto Public Health’s report
    on options for a restaurant rating system and public disclosure of
    inspection information. The public is invited to the meeting to comment on
    the report. The meeting starts at 1:00 p.m., Committee Room 1, Toronto City
