GreeKrave, co-owned by Chris Pavlatos and Spiro Markatos, was nominated for “Best Gyro on Long Island” for the upcoming 2018 “Best of Long Island” competition.
Pavlatos and Markatos were both interviewed by morning Long Island News 12 anchor Doug Geed.
On the history of “Ohi Day,” Pavlatos said, “In a strong way, it just means ‘no.’ Back in 1940, Mussolini wanted to march through Greece, and he figured he was going to go through unchallenged, our prime minister said ‘no’ and that lead the Italians having to fight six months. It was significant since it changed the trend of World War II, and in essence, it was definitely beneficial in gaining victory.”
Some of GreeKrave’s food that was featured on News 12 included the classic Greek salad, stuffed grape leaves (“dolmadakia”), as well as gyro with tzatziki sauce on top, and Greek lasagna, which is affectionately known as “pastitsio.” Their savory desserts included baklava and their classic rice pudding.
Markatos revealed that their most popular food items are the Greek salad, gyro, chicken souvlaki and the rice pudding.
