Global gaming booms but not everything appeals to Toronto’s gaming community

Riddled with technical problems and lacking a solid narrative, Bethesda’s Fallout 76 was widely panned by Toronto gamers.

The global gaming market generated over $184 billion in revenue in 2023. While some video games were popular in ever high-income nation, others showed regional variations. Looking at Canada specifically,  some of the most popular video games were not as popular in Toronto.

“Gaming isn’t just about entertainment; it’s a powerful tool for cognitive development, problem-solving, and strategic thinking,” states Josh Gordon, a Tech Expert from Geonode tells Digital Journal. “However, it also depends on the type of game you’re playing.”

Gordon has collected information from trustworthy websites, such as TripAdvisor and GlassDoor, about the mobile games in Toronto that have the lowest ratings.

This assessment reveals:

Dungeon Keeper (Electronic Arts)

Gordon finds: “Even with EA’s reputation, Dungeon Keeper fell flat regarding user reviews. A report from Tech in Asia spoke of the relentless in-app monetization and sluggish gameplay resulting in dismal reviews.”

Aliens: Colonial Marines (Sega)

Gordon assess that: “Sega’s Aliens: Colonial Marines drew critical flak for its faulty AI and terrible storyline. A popular survey from Quora echoed disappointment, citing a general lack of polish.”

SimCity 2013 (Electronic Arts)

Gordon comments: “EA’s much-hyped SimCity 2013 failed spectacularly, with gamers centering their discontent around its always-online requirement. A Metacritic report details the barrage of negative user reviews, dwelling on frustrations about the constant server crashes.”

Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis)

According to Gordon: “Sega’s attempt at resurrecting a classic backfired. The Esquire explains that the game’s helicopter-like motion resulted in dizziness, causing an instant critical backlash.”

Ride to Hell: Retribution (Deep Silver)

Gordon evaluates: “Suffering from technical glitches, terrible controls, and a poor storyline, this game received a dismal score from gamers and gaming platforms. A review from Metacritic supports this.”

Superman 64 (Titus Software)

Gordon opines: “An appalling rendering of a beloved hero, Superman 64 saw its downfall due to awful controls and frustrating gameplay, echoed by Screen Rant.”

Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt)

Gordon uncovers; “Cyberpunk 2077, despite the initial hype, is now infamous for its slew of technical issues. A Reddit post report reflects the evident player discontent visible through Toronto’s low user reviews.”

Fallout 76 (Bethesda)

Gordon has discovered: “Riddled with technical problems and lacking a solid narrative, Bethesda’s Fallout 76 was widely panned by Toronto gamers, as noted in a report from Game Rant.”

In contrast, Toronto gamers prefer:

  • Minecraft (Mojang).
  • Portal (Valve Corporation).
  • Fitbit Coach (Fitbit).
  • Duolingo (Duolingo Inc).
  • Monument Valley 2 (Ustwo Games).
  • Civilization VI (Firaxis Games).
  • Lumosity (Lumos Labs).
  • Blossom Blast Saga (King).

According to Gordon: “One must remember video games are not just animated pixels; they are a form of interactive art. High-quality games marrying technology and artistry are those that captivate audiences. Also, beyond entertainment, games can help users build valuable skills.”
